Rags, old towels work great!
Paint brushes
Sand paper
Belt sander (optional but makes sanding so much easier!)
Furniture Stripper - Around $12
Min-Wax Combination Stain and Polyurethane
Follow the directions on the stripper, I like the liquid but you may prefer gel stripper.

After furniture is stripped sand with sand paper, scratches on the furniture will depict which grade to use.
The higher the number of the sand paper the finer the sand paper the lower number is more coarse.
With large scratches start with coarse sand paper and work your way up for a smooth finish.
Apply the stain/polyurethane combination in thin coats allowing 24 hours drying time between coats.
